Eight contenders in Breeders’ Cup races, including top juvenile entrants Union Rags, Weemissfrankie, and Stephanie's Kitten, are graduates of the Eddie Woods sales and training program.
Leading the roster of Woods grads is undefeated Union Rags, 2-1 morning line favorite for the $2,000,000 Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. The striking son of Dixie Union was sold for $390,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida Select Sale to his owner, Phyllis Wyeth. Union Rags has won all three of his starts by wide margins, including the Champagne (G1). He is trained by Michael Matz, and will be ridden Saturday by Javier Castellano.
Another undefeated contender from the Woods program is Weemissfrankie, current second choice for the $2,000,000 Grey Goose Juvenile Fillies (G1). A dual Grade 1 winner on the West Coast, Weemissfrankie was sold for $175,000 at the OBS April Sale to an ownership group comprised of Sharon Alisea, Bran Jam Stable, and Ciaglia Stable. Trained by Peter Eurton, she will be ridden Friday by Rafael Bejarano. The daughter of Sunriver was bred in Florida by Hidden Point Farm.
Woods’ third Grade 1 two-year-old winner of the year and third top Breeders’ Cup prospect is $1,000,000 Juvenile Fillies Turf (G2) contender Stephanie’s Kitten. This daughter of Kitten’s Joy has won or placed in all her starts to date, including a victory in the $400,000 Alcibiades (G1) at Keeneland last time out. Sold at the OBS April Sale to owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey, she is trained by Wayne Catalano, and will be ridden on Friday by Johnny Velazquez.
Yet another Woods grad gunning for Breeders' Cup glory is $2,000,000 Mile entrant Jeranimo. The son of Congaree was sold at the 2008 Barretts May Sale for $70,000, and has now posted earnings in excess of $660,000. He won the Oak Tree Mile (G2) in his last racetrack appearance. Michael Pender trains and Martin Garcia will be aboard for the Mile.
The remaining Woods' contenders are: Rattlesnake Bridge, running in the $5,000,000 Classic (G1); Irish Gypsy, facing the starter in the $1,000,000 Filly & Mare Sprint (G1); Great Attack, entered in the $1,000,000 Turf Sprint (G2); Sum of the Parts, aiming for the $500,000 Juvenile Sprint.
Eddie Woods has sold more than 50 graded stakes winners, including Breeders’ Cup Champion Midnight Lute and additional Champions Big Brown and Left Bank.
