Eddie Woods training center graduates took two of the nation’s most lucrative races on October 2nd, when Haynesfield dominated the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) and Always a Princess cruised home in the $205,200 Indiana Oaks (G2).

Haynesfield became racing’s newest millionaire and Woods’ 13th Grade 1 winner, with his facile romp in the prestigious JC Gold Cup, a key prep for the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). Carrying co-top weight of 126 lbs., Haynesfield led at every point of call, and under his own courage, increased his advantage to as much as 7 ½ lengths deep into the stretch. Haynesfield strode under the wire four lengths clear and well in hand, with Ramon Dominguez barely moving a muscle. Final time was 2:02 2/5, and the vanquished field included heavily favored Horse of the Year candidate Blame, who was handed his first defeat this year.

A stakes winners every year, at 2, 3, and 4, Haynesfield now boasts a heady record of 13-9-1-1 and $1,116,981, including seven stakes victories. He was sold by Eddie Woods, agent, at the 2008 Keeneland April Sale to Vision Racing. Owned by Turtle Bird Stable and trained by Steve Asmussen, he likely heads next to the $5,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Just 20 minutes prior to the JC Gold Cup, Eddie Woods Training Center graduate Always a Princess charged to her first Graded stakes victory in the Indiana Oaks. Making her first career start on dirt, Arnold Zetcher’s homebred went straight to the front under Martin Garcia, shook off all challengers, and pulled away late for a decisive 3 ¼-length victory. Always a Princess now sports a record of 5-3-1-0 and $304,889 for owner/breeder Zetcher. Trained by Bob Baffert, she is undefeated as a 3-year-old, following a two-year-old campaign in which she was second to Blind Luck in the Oak Leaf S. (G1).

Eddie Woods’ training center graduates have now produced at least 44 Graded stakes winners. And Woods’ two-year-olds in training sale consignments have produced more stakes winners and more Graded stakes winners in 2010 than any other juvenile consignor.
