Newgrange and Newgate completed an Eddie Woods training grad exacta in Saturday’s $200,000 San Pasqual S. (G2) at Santa Anita, with Newgrange holding off Newgate’s late charge to win the 1 1/8-mile contest by one length.

Newgrange, 5, became racing’s lastest millionaire with the victory. The dark bay now has five graded stakes wins, including the 2023 renewal of this race, to his name and has earned $1,007,634 for owners David A. Bernsen, LLC, Little Red Feather Racing and Rockingham Ranch.

Newgrange took the lead soon after the start and was pressed by Mixto for six furlongs before Mixto began to weaken. Newgate loomed a major challenge at the top of the stretch, but could never get closer than the final margin of one length.

“I think we’d been talking about if he had run a race like this, now maybe taking a big swing at something like Dubai,” said winning trainer Phil D’Amato. “It’s going to be even tougher there, but the money is incredible, so we can do something like that. We could stay home, but these guys in the winner’s circle, I think they are on board for Dubai.”

The $12-million Dubai World Cup (G1) will be run Mar. 30.
