Eddie Woods sale graduate Kantharos remained undefeated and untested after his 7 ¼ length romp in the Saratoga Special S. (G2) on August 16.

Despite being bumped at the start and racing over the sloppy Spa surface, the two-year-old son of Lion Heart showed his class and his courage, forging past the early pace-setters at the 7/16th pole, and drawing off in a common canter. This was the third win in three lifetime starts for Kantharos, who broke his maiden by 11 ¾ lengths at Churchill, then won the Bashford Manor S. (G3) by 9 ½ lengths.

Owned by Stonestreet Stables and trained by Steve Asmussen, Kantharos was ridden to victory by Garrett Gomez, subbing for the injured Robby Albarado. Asmussen has previously stated that the Eddie Woods' trainee “came into the barn a professional. He’s not made a mistake.” After the Saratoga Special, Mike Watchmaker named Kantharos the nation's #1 juvenile on Watchmaker Watch; and veteran scribe Ed Fountaine wrote in the New York Post: "There may be a better two-year-old colt in the east than Kantharos, but if there is, no one has seen him yet."

Pegasus Holding Group purchased Kantharos for $80,000 at the 2009 Keeneland September Sale, and Eddie Woods sold him for $250,000 at OBS this past March. The chestnut colt has a record of 3-3-0-0 and $185,213.

Last Friday at Saratoga, another Eddie Woods OBS March graduate showed his mettle in a Grade 2 race, when Grand Rapport missed winning the Racing Hall of Fame S. (G2) by a nostril. The 3-year-old son of Grand Reward came flying on the outside 4-wide, and just missed the nod in a blanket finish. Racing for Earle Mack and trained by Gary Contessa, he has a record of 5-2-1-0 and $112,139.

Eddie Woods’ two-year-olds in training consignments have now produced 20 stakes horses, 10 stakes winners this year, including more Graded stakes winners than any other juvenile consignor.
