Eddie Woods Training program grad Raging Sea defeated a stellar field that included 2024 Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna in the $1 million La Troienne S. (G1) May 2nd at Churchill Downs.

Owned and bred by Alpha Delta Stables, Raging Sea has now won six graded stakes and earned $2,145,318. She is 8-2-1 in 14 lifetime starts.

Making her first start since last November in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1), Raging Sea sat several length off of the pace set by stablemate Randomized, who was tracked closely by Thorpedo Anna through the first six furlongs. Turning for home, Thorpedo Anna began to weaken and Raging Sea bore down on Randomized. She surged past the pacesetter with a sixteenth to run and held off a hard-charging Taxed to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:42.91 on a fast track.

“I was really looking forward to a little bit of a rematch (from the Breeders’ Cup, when Raging Sea was second to Thorpedo Anna), and I was happy that she was able to get up there. She's really etched her own solid career and not just a one-off sort of horse. So (much) consistency over many years now, all the way back her 2-year-old year, so she's really turned into a solid, solid horse that everyone needs to respect. The pace was slower than we anticipated but Flavien (Prat) did a nice job keeping her in striking distance and responded really well down the stretch.”

Five-year-old Raging Sea is out of the Storm Cat mare Stormy Welcome and hails from the family of champion A.P. Indy and Summer Squall.
