War At Sea rallies to win the G3 Golden Gate Handicap

Eddie Woods graduate War At Sea closed fastest of all in the stretch to defeat six rivals in the Golden Gate Handicap (G3) on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Golden Gate Fields for his second career stakes victory.

Ridden by Frank Alvarado, War At Sea raced in fourth position early in the 1 1/16-mile fixture, tracking a moderate pace to the half-mile marker. He was steered to the four-path in the upper stretch and shifted six-wide approaching the furlong marker. With an unrelenting charge through the stretch, the bay colt collared the leader Silent Poet in the final strides to score by a head at the finish, stopping the clock in 1:44.48.

Owned by Doubledown Stables and trained by Ron Ellis, War At Sea was bred in Kentucky by Lewis Thoroughbred Breeding. The son of War Front-Serene Melody, by Street Cry (IRE), was purchased by Ron Ellis out of the Eddie Woods consignment for $525,000 at the 2021 OBS March Sale.

War At Sea captured his first stakes win last year, taking down top prize in the Cinema Stakes at Santa Anita. War At Sea, who also finished third in the Del Mar Derby (G2) last year, is now a winner in four of 14 lifetime starts and he has earned $278,472.
