Cabo Spirit picked up his fourth career graded stakes win on April 20 when the Eddie Woods Training program grad led at every point of call in the $100,000 American S. at Santa Anita Park.

The 6-year-old veteran picked up his first stakes win since taking the John Henry Turf Championship (G2) over the same track in September.

Ridden by Mike Smith for trainer George Papaprodromou, Cabo Spirit took command of the race right away, leading through fractions of :47.31 and 1:11.05, with King of Gosford (GB) applying pressure. At the top of the stretch, Cabo Spirit pulled clear, then dug in to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:34.42 on the firm turf.

“I asked him a little bit along the way,” Smith said. “I just stayed a little busy on him, because he was out there by himself, and I knew there some closers that could come at us in the last 100 to 50 yards. I just wanted to make sure I kept him focused.”

Cabo Spirit, owned by Kretz Racing LLC, earned his first stakes win in the Eddie Logan at Santa Anita at age 3. That year he would add victories in the La Jolla Handicap (G3) at Del Mar and Twilight Derby (G2) at Santa Anita. His lifetime earnings now stand at $1,134,336.
