Godolphin homebred and Eddie Woods Training grad Good Cheer kept her record intact with another dominating performance in the $1.5 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) Friday at Churchill Downs.

Unhurried out of post 10 in field of 13, Good Cheer settled nicely in mid-pack as La Cara led the field through the early stages. Midway on the final turn, Good Cheer swung wide and began to close in on the leaders. She was five-wide coming into the stretch, then roared past Tenma, who had taken the lead. In full flight late, Good Cheer crossed the wire 2 ¼-lengths in front of late-closing Drexel Hill.

“The word I just keep going back to is her level of class,” said trainer Brad Cox in the post-race press conference. “She's just incredibly easy to deal with. She's easy to train. She listens to her rider. She's easy to be around. Very, very sound filly. We've never had to back off of her. She just marched forward since we've had her and works well every week.”

Good Cheer has won her seven starts by a combined 44 ½ lengths and earned $1,733,230. The Oaks is her first Grade 1 win, following victories in the Fair Grounds Oaks, Rachel Alexandra S. and Golden Rod S., all Grade 2 events.

By Medaglia d’Oro, Good Cheer is out of the Grade One-winning mare Wedding Toast.

Cox said all major Grade One races for 3-year-old fillies are in play, with a long-term target of the Breeders’ Cup this fall.
