Union Rags, an Eddie Woods 2011 sales grad, ran away to a 5 1/4-length score in the $300,000 Champagne S. at Belmont Park, setting the 2-year-old colt up perfectly for next month's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs.

Woods consigned Union Rags to the February Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale, where the son of Dixie Union brought a final bid of $390,000 from Phyllis Wyeth's Chadds Ford Stable. Union Rags had been previously purchased for $145,000 as a yearling at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select sale.

Union Rags is now undefeated in three starts for his owner, earning $498,800. He broke his maiden going five furlongs at Delaware Park in July, then dominated the Grade 2 Saratoga Special by 7 1/4-lengths on Aug. 15.

“I think he’s a real good horse,” said trainer Michael Matz. “Anytime you can win going five-eighths (in his debut) with me, you know they’re nice horses. I’ve had horses on and off for Mrs. Wyeth, and she said to me, ‘I’m going to have a good one for you,’ and I think she does.”

Union Rags is a full brother to the stakes-placed Geefour. Their dam Terpsichoirist was a multiple graded stakes winner of $426,986.
