Eddie Woods knew he had a nice 2-year-old colt in the March OBS sale when he sold a son of Lion Heart for $250,000 to Stonestreet Stables LLC on Mar. 16. Slightly less than two months later, the speedy chestnut named Kantharos romped home an 11 3/4-length winner in a five-furlong maiden race at Churchill Downs on May 13.

The Churchill strip was rendered sloppy following a brief spring shower, but the Steve Asmussen trainee was unfazed by the off going. Kantharos broke well from post six, engaging in a duel with Gold for Cash for the first quarter mile. After that it was only a matter of how big the winning margin would be as the gap widened with every stride. The final time was :57 4/5 seconds.

Kantharos is out of Contessa Halo, making him a half-brother to the Grade 3 winner Ikigai, who accounted for the Mr. Prospector H. (G3) and was second in the Richter Scale S. (G2).

Kantharos races for Stonestreet Stables; he earned $28,800 for the victory.
